Schmetz naalden zijn voorzien van een kleurcode, op de naald ziet u één of twee kleurcode streepjes. Het bovenste steepje geeft de soort van de schmetz naald aan het onderste streepje de dikte. Garendikte en naald

Hieronder vind u een advies voor welke naald u nodig heeft voor een bepaalde garendikte.

Garendikte 80 voor naald dikte 70 tot 110.

Garendikte 60 voor naald dikte 80 tot 110.

Garendikte 40 voor naald dikte 90 tot 120.

Garendikte 30 voor naald dikte 100 tot 130.

Garendikte 20 voor naald dikte 120 tot 140.

Garendikte 15 voor naald dikte 140 tot 180.

Garendikte 10 voor naald dikte 170 tot 220.

Garendikte  8 voor naald dikte 190 tot 260.

Voor huishoudnaaimachines adviseren wij om niet dikker garen te gebruiken dan dikte 30. Overigens staat er op het alles naaigaren vaak geen dikte vermeldt. Ga er in dit geval vanuit dat 'gewoon' garen geschikt is voor naalden tot dikte 100 en u voor doorstikgaren minimaal naald dikte 90 gebruikt.

Batching in sewing = doing the same step on a bunch of pieces at once instead of finishing one item start-to-finish. It’s a total time- and sanity-saver 🧵✨

Here’s how to do it, step by step:

1. Prep everything first

Before you even sit at the machine:

  • Cut all fabric pieces

  • Mark notches, darts, pleats, etc.

  • Fuse all interfacing

  • Wind extra bobbins (future you will be grateful)

Think “assembly line,” not “one-off project.”

2. Group by task, not by garment

Instead of:

Cut → sew → press → finish → repeat

Do:

  • Sew all shoulder seams

  • Then all side seams

  • Then all hems

  • Then all facings or collars

You’re repeating the same motion, which is faster and more accurate.

3. Chain sew whenever possible

This is huge.

  • Don’t cut thread between pieces

  • Feed the next piece right under the presser foot

  • Snip threads at the end

Great for:

  • Seams

  • Darts

  • Topstitching

  • Waistbands

4. Press in batches too

Ironing is part of sewing (sad but true 😅).

  • Sew 5–10 seams

  • Press all of them at once

  • Move on

Your iron stays hot and your rhythm stays intact.

5. Keep pieces organized

Batching only works if nothing gets lost:

  • Stack pieces in order

  • Use clips or pins to keep sets together

  • Label sizes if you’re sewing multiples

6. Do fiddly steps all at once

Tiny, annoying steps are perfect for batching:

  • Turning straps

  • Making belt loops

  • Sewing buttonholes

  • Attaching labels or tags

Put on a podcast and knock them out.

7. Finish in stages

Save these for the end:

  • Hemming

  • Buttons/snaps

  • Final pressing

It feels sooo satisfying to see everything come together at once.

When batching is BEST

  • Sewing multiples (scrunchies, masks, bags, garments)

  • Production sewing

  • Anything repetitive

When batching is NOT ideal

  • One complex couture garment

  • Highly fitted pieces that need try-ons between steps

8 of My Best Sewing Tips and Hacks for Beginners

Tips:

  • When starting to sew. Make sure your bobbin and upper thread is about 4 to 6 inches long and can hold them the first couple stitches
  • I learned from an elderly aunt that was a seamstress that had two stitches on her sewing machine, straight and zigzag. She said that no matter the fabric you are sewing never start on the end. To prevent bunching, come down 1/4 inch sew backwards to the end, then forward. Perfect every time.
  • My best advice to new sewers is...when you have become frustrated, just turn the machine off and walk away. Come back tomorrow, start from the beginning, thread your machine over again...check your settings and try again. Frustration BUILDS into anger, and nobody enjoys that which makes them angry all the time. And when it finally works correctly, don't be shy about patting yourself on the back a little...everything takes time and practice to improve, so take your time, practice and enjoy the process.
  • The best tip for threading the machine is by placing a small white piece of paper behind the needle can see the eye of the needle so much better
  • One thing I learned after I had been sewing for awhile is that if you store your sewing machine with the presser foot up, you are putting stress on the mechanism and it could wear out faster. Take a spare piece of fabric (with a little thickness preferred), stick it between your feed dogs and presser foot, and leave the presser foot down. The fabric will also protect your feed dogs from wear.
  • Prewash your fabric. Iron every seam. Tacking stitches are life savers. (Was de stof eerst. Strijk alle naden. Het vastzetten met rijgsteken is essentieel.)
  • I want to add that a jean needle is a must for sewing denim.
  • I always use a size 9 needle... It's so small it pierces through the fabric like butter. I go slow and careful and the needle never breaks :) I find denim needles really have to fight their way through the fabric due to their thickness. I get the theory of denim needles, but have never had a lot of success with them.
  • The weight on the ruler is the very BEST hack I have tried. No matter how hard I tried, My ruler slipped!! Now, my cuts are strait, no slips and its so simple to place that weight on my ruler!!
  • The tip about the scrap piece of fabric to start off was fantastic!! Bunching up at the start of a row of stitching was so frustrating before! Simple and effective! Also the tip about rereading the machine when things are going wrong….. it works.
  • It took me many years to learn the lesson to just STOP if you're frustrated & nothings going right. Inevitably, the next day, turns out it was no big deal & easily fixable. I am finally a convert.
